309 unsold lots at DVLA November auction 2008

 

As another DVLA number plate auction has ended and we run the numbers on what did and didn’t sell – and for how much.

 

At each DVLA auction there are quite a few unsold lots that don’t attract a single bid – which is bizarre as some of the cherished number plates are actually of a high quality:

All DVLA plate auctions and even the DVLA sealed bids auction have unsold lots – the DVLA tend to average a 20% unsold rate.

 

What happens to these unsold number plates?

 

These lots go back into the vast selection in the DVLA archives and will be offered for sale again at a future DVLA numberplate auction.

In a word - no

Some plates such as MAG11K fetched £3100 and the highest priced private plate - 250SWB fetched £51,250 – a great Ferrari number plate

Nonetheless 31% of lots remained unsold and the average sale price was just £816 - instead of the DVLA's usual £3500 quoted figure.

A great many lots sold for as little as £250 – no doubt to be number plate Christmas presents as the day draws closer.

As a first attempt - the DVLA sealed bids auction lacked the lustre of the typical private number plate auction- we are sure to see another attempt and other forays as the DVLA experiment the best ways to generate revenues through personalised number plate sales.

As with all DVLA number plate auctions – some of the cherished number plate lots will appear on number plate classifieds websites and with dealers in the coming days – at notably higher prices than they sold for...
